POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of drugs offences after a man collapsed in a Huddersfield supermarket car park.

West Yorkshire Police officers and paramedics were called to the ground floor Tesco car park on Friday lunchtime where a man had collapsed.

Police cordoned off a corner of the car park off Viaduct Street to allow detectives and forensic staff to carry out investigations.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the scene shortly before 1pm.

“Emergency services were called to reports of a collapsed male on Viaduct Street, Huddersfield at 12.56pm.

“Officers attended and the male was taken to hospital. A man has been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.”

The man who collapsed is understood to be a man in his early 30s.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called at 12.50pm to deal with a medical incident involving a man.

Two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.

The man was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax for treatment. His condition has not been disclosed.

Tesco shoppers told the Examiner they had seen a man sitting down at the scene of the incident.

A rough sleeper said the car park had become a magnet for drug users. Parts of the ground floor car park are gloomy and there are areas which are hidden from view.
