Giants find their form in Rovers rout

WOOLFORD’S MEN RUN IN SEVEN TRIES TO MOVE OFF FOOT OF SUPER LEAGUE WITH FIRST HOME WIN

- By JOE BUCK

HUDDERSFIELD Giants secured their first home win of the season with a dominant victory over Hull Kingston Rovers.

All worries about Simon Woolford’s men lacking creativity and potency were obliterated as the Claret and Gold scored seven tries, with Jermaine McGillvary and Kruise Leeming scoring two apiece at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Hull rarely threatened throughout the game as the Giants defence largely nullified any creative sparks from Rovers.

The visitors looked to have scored within the first three minutes, however, a desperate lunge from McGillvary ahead of William Oakes was enough to force a goal-line dropout and an early let-off.

The dropouts continued for Huddersfield as they were forced into defending four repeat sets as Hull dominated the early stages.

This turned into five sets after Giants conceded a penalty, with Ryan Shaw slotting his kick home to put the visitors into a deserved 2-0 lead.

But Giants pressure soon resulted in a penalty and Lee Gaskell, like his kicking counterpart, made no mistake as he levelled.

The first try of the game was scored by Leeming after a great assist from McGillvary, which was rounded off by a conversion from Gaskell.

McGillvary, for the first time in the match, found the ball in hand and exploited a gap to perfection as he nipped through the defence and executed a well-timed off-load to Leeming, who slid over a greasy try line.

Hull continued to pose questions for a Giants defence who conceded a flurry of penalties that allowed their opponents wave after wave of attacking play.

However, throughout this, the Giants rearguard stood strong and, on a rare venture into the Hull half, Giants forced another dropout.

The resulting set involved two big hits, first from Ukuma Ta’ai who bulldozed his way through a three-man tackle and then Joe Wardle, who looked like finding a gap, was simultaneously tackled high and low to a loud reaction from the crowd.

Thetackles halted the game momentarily but, not 30 seconds after the restart, Giants scored once again.

This time, Oliver Roberts latched onto a Leeming kick and had the routine job of placing the ball down underneath the posts to increase the scoreline to 14-2.

The lead was increased even further just two minutes later through a bleach-blonde Darnell McIntosh who, reading a disguised Gaskell kick, rose above the static Hull defence to score the third try of the evening and his second of the season.

Giants went into half-time with a 20-2 advantage and, other than a few moments in the opening stages, looked good value for their lead.

The second half got off to a flyer for Giants as, with not two minutes gone, Leeming added his second of the game following a line-break from Gaskell who, much like his first try, off-loaded the ball to Leeming for
