Skipsea Sands is the perfect

-

Our first stop was the smaller of the two playgrounds, which was a matter of seconds away from our caravan. With a large swing, slide, climbing wall and fireman’s pole the children loved it. Little did they know there was a bigger and better one to come later in the day.

We took a look at the on-site store, which stocked a huge variety of groceries, treats and souvenirs before popping into the Kingdom amusements arcade.

To my three-year-old’s delight there was a huge soft play area towards which he made a beeline. The five-year-old was mesmerised by the slot machines, fairground games and the dreaded ‘grabber’ machines there.

Her favourite was the virtual skipping machine that got faster and faster the quicker and more accurately you jumped, resulting in reams of tickets to exchange for goodies.

Some sweets, a bat and ball, and Slinky later we headed back to the caravan for a light lunch via the second adventure playground.

With gasps of sheer joy, the little ones – and their dad – completed the obstacle course of climbing frames, balance beams, monkey bars and swinging tyres before checking out the fishing lake and playing an impromptu game of football with newly-made friends.

In the afternoon we signed our five-year-old up to the aqua paddlers activity in the indoor pool. She loved it. It looked like great fun but also like hard work!

They had to control small boats by moving handles in a circular motion, and navigate around the pool collecting foam shapes and taking them back to the instructor.

There are activities on offer every day for children, with different things for each age group, so plenty to do on top of the array of facilities on site.

After the session the pool opened again for swimming, so the rest of us joined her in the water, with my husband and I taking turns to try out the sauna and steam room. There was a shallow area for the young ones and a larger pool area where my daughter could get swimming practice in.

After our action-packed day I thought the kids would be exhausted but they pushed through the tiredness for a lovely family meal in the

Boathouse bar and Restaurant, which served traditional pub grub. Then we joined the party in the Showbar.

With the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the children had no issues with jumping up and getting involved with the Starland Krazy Showtime games and dancing. They enjoyed being part of the ‘Krazy Krew’ and were in stitches at Naarky the villain and his capers as Sparky and Sparkle the rabbits tried to stop him. They still sing the Starland Krazy jingle to this day!

Exhausted, excited and eager to stay for an evening of entertainment, we nevertheless called it a night and headed back for some well-earned shut-eye.

The following morning we headed along the coast to the traditional seaside town of Bridlington.

With its sandy beaches, promenades and historic harbours, the quirky old town was just as we had hoped.

The light breeze, smell of the sea and the little fishing boats and nets lining the harbour helped us feel as though we had been transported back in time.

We browsed the quaint little shops selling shells and seaside memorabilia and, of course, there was the compulsory trip to John Bull’s sweet and rock shop.

A carrier bag full later, and an ice cream in hand, we took a stroll
