Were you in this high school class of ‘59?

-

THE students of ‘59 from Form 5G of Huddersfield Girls’ High School are hoping to organise a reunion.

One look at the photograph from 60 years ago shows how times have changed.

These young ladies are the very picture of decorum in smart school uniform and with pert and attentive attitude. Except, of course, they were teenage girls.

They were listening to Cliff Richard singing Living Doll, Buddy Holly performing It Doesn’t Matter Anymore, Bobby Darin crooning to his Dream Lover, as well as songs from Elvis, Craig Douglas and Ricky Nelson.

Top cinema attractions included Ben Hur, Life In Emergency Ward 10 and Doris Day and Rock Hudson sharing Pillow Talk, while on black and white TV they would have been watching (homework permitting) Roger Moore as Ivanhoe, Oh Boy! and Juke Box Jury.

A general election had returned a Conservative Government for the third time under Harold Macmillan, who had bragged we had never had it so good,

Around 20,000 were at a CND rally in London, and only 30% of households had a car.

Organising the reunion are form captain Anne Headey (nee O’Dea) and Christine Headey (nee Clayton). The teacher was Mrs Pluthero. Two of the ladies have not been named. Anyone know them?

Anyone in the class interested in the reunion can contact Anne at dgh@pacific-lifestyle.co.uk or on 01484 661934, 07899 840410.

Back row: Diane Sykes, Madeline Edwards, Joan Blezzard, Christine Clayton (now Headey), Wylva Raby, unknown, Lesley Halstead, Susan Hamill, Judith Sampson.

Middle row: Doreen Lewis, Sheila Brough, Carole Whitehead, Judith Roebuck, Judith Payne, Judith Whittaker, Jaqueline Sykes, Jean Robinson, Diane Stringer, Pat Walby.

Front row: Christine Sampson, Pat Moxon, unknown, Anne O’Dea (now Headey), Mrs Pluthero, Hazel Bamforth, Jennifer Sampson, Glenys Woffenden, Margot Dronfield.
