Wagner: Town will face up to big guns again

- By STEVEN CHICKEN @examinerHTAFC

FORMER Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner believes there was an inevitability to the Terriers’ relegation from the Premier League, but is convinced the club are in a good position to rise again.

Wagner, now head coach at German side Schalke, left Town in January with the club firmly in the relegation zone, and his successor, Jan Siewert, was unable to turn things around.

“Obviously, at the end, everything came together (turned out) as it will for a small football club like Huddersfield in the biggest and the strongest league in the world,” said Wagner.

“We had a lot of issues which we wanted to solve last season and maybe, at the end of the day, it only happened as everyone thought it would happen the year before for us.

“It was a season in which we saw what happened when we tried to compete against the big guys in the football world.”

However, Wagner believes that the club are now in a better position to have another go at the Premier League dream if they can get their current poor form turned around under new manager Danny Cowley.

He said: “The most important thing is that this football club is in a much, much better position financially and in terms of stability as well, compared to when joined.

“They have everything in place to build something, every financial power to create something, and now it is up to them to decide which way they would like to go.

“You need to have a few good seasons and you have to have luck at one or the other moments as well.

“But the most important thing is that you stick together and that you create a plan and a vision of where you would like to go to, and you follow it.”

Wagner also admitted that he

I keeps an eye out for Town’s results every week - and hopes to see a swift turnaround in fortunes, saying: “I always check the results and I’m in touch with one or the other person at the football club.

“It’s really sad for me to see how poor their recent form is and that they are struggling as much as they are at the moment.

“There are so many people who work behind the scenes very hard day-in, day-out. Especially, as well, for all the supporters who had an amazing time with us, it’s very sad to see what’s going on there at the minute.”
