‘We’ve let the club down and the fans down’

JERMAINE McGillvary believes the Giants need a drastic overhaul after what he says has been the worst season of his career.

The Claret and Gold go into their last match of the season against Catalans Dragons tonight with the threat of relegation hanging over them.

England wing ace McGillvary is confident they can beat the Dragons to avoid the drop into the Championship but says that would only paper over the cracks.

“We’ve let the club down, we’ve let the fans down and we’ve let the town down as well,” said the 31-year-old, who has spent his entire career with his home-town club.

“We shouldn’t be in this situation but we deserve to be in this situation because of the stuff we have tossed up throughout the season.

“The table doesn’t lie and we’re where we are for a reason. We’ve been disastrous, inconsistent, it’s not been good.”

Huddersfield have kept their survival hopes alive with away wins over Salford, Hull KR and Hull in the second half of the season but they have not won at home since May, which McGillvary says has been tough on the fans.

“It’s probably been the worst season of my professional career,” McGillvary added. “I’m a Huddersfield lad and people come and stop me in the street and say they’ve not seen anything like this.

“It’s sad to be a part of it. But it’s the truth.

“It’s not good and only the guys out there, us 17, can fix it.

“We all care, we’ve cared from the start of the season until now. I just feel that as a team we’re just not good enough for whatever reason.

“I take full responsibility, I don’t blame the coach, I don’t blame my team-mates. I’m as much a part of this as anyone.

“We’ve been disastrous but I feel, if we can win this game, it will make amends for a lot of things that have gone on this season.

“I think we’re going to go out there and give it our best shot.

“But I do think drastic things need to happen in the close season.

“Clearly we’re not a good enough team and it shows. Everyone needs to be held accountable, including myself.

“We shouldn’t be in this situation, but we deserve to be in this situation because of some of the stuff we’ve tossed up this season.”

“You don’t gain experience from being in this situation, you just gain the same feelings, it’s like a fear of not messing up.

“It’s not good, it’s not good at all.

“We can make amends this week, get the win, let the dust settle and prepare for next year.”

Huddersfield’s Australian coach Simon Woolford says plans are already in place to ensure the club do not flirt with relegation in 2020.

“When you have a year like this, you have got to review all departments,” he said.

“We’ve already started the review process from a coaching and high performance point of view and from a player roster point of view.

“There are some things in place that are going to change. There are
