Legend Stanley’s laugh a minute at Giants fan forum

- FANS’ VIEW By DAVE CALVERLY

ASK any modern fan to name their favourite team and there will be three names on everybody’s list.

They are – and no disrespect to all the other great players who have donned the famous claret and gold – Wally Gibson, Paul Reilly and last week’s guest Stanley Gene.

Stanley was truly humbled to have been asked along. However, he was wary enough to have brought his minder, another Giants’ favourite and Paddock sandwich maker Jeff Wittenburg.

Stanley is a native of Papua New Guinea where his family own land where they grow coffee.

His home is on a hillside where there is no light once the sun sets and no plumbed water.

Stanley had to walk for 40 minutes to get to school.

His love of rugby league started in his teens and he quickly progressed to become an international star and Super League performer.

Why hasn’t he returned home now that he has stopped playing?

His eldest son works in Bradford, and his youngest, who is Huddersfield born, is still at school. Once he is settled Stanley said, ‘who knows’?

Stanley’s stories brought the house down at times, and most of them can be found in his book Daydream Believer, which can still be found courtesy of Google.

His pride and joy these days, however, is his Stanley Gene Foundation, which is committed to reaching the unreachable communities of Papua New Guinea and educating young Papua New Guineans.

In particular, he sends rugby shirts back to the islands and there are many people running about in our colours. In closing, Stanley said that he would come back to us again bringing the rest of that recordbreaking Northern Ford [Championship] side with him. Watch this space!

Forget all your moans and gripes, you’ve got to come along to the John Smith’s Stadium tonight and make the crowd our 14th player.

All the players say how they are lifted by the vocal backing they receive.

So let’s be loud and proud and

BACK THE TEAM.

At the match we shall be handing over a substantial cheque to the club thanks to your membership money, entry fees at Academy games, and other fundraising activities.

However, more help is needed to make this great club less dependent on the generosity of

Ken Davy. How can this be achieved?

Apart from an increase in season ticket sales, you can become a more active member of HGSA. Nomination forms for your next committee will be in Turnbridge WMC and the Legends Bar on Friday and also online at our website.

Yes, a week after the appearance of coach Simon Woolford on October 1, our AGM will be held at Turnbridge when the star of the night will be the winner of this year’s Wagstaff Trophy.

And finally, put December 13 in your diary. Santa will be once again loaning us his reindeer for our hugely popular Reindeer Race Night.

We try and keep all things Giants up-to-date on the calendar at the bottom of our homepage GiantsSupporters.co.uk. Our Facebook page and Twitter feed give more real-time news - use the hashtag #hgsasavethedate. And we are now on Instagram.
