Building new level of respect at club

but the staff as well. I think for us it’s always about trying to meet people to start to create a human connection and we’ve been able to do that in the first few days.

“That’s what the early phase is about, it’s about getting information and speaking to everybody at the football club and by doing that you start to see the correlations and patterns and certainly the areas of the club that are good and we can run with and then maybe the areas we think we can improve and add value.

“Most importantly at this stage you’re trying to build a level of respect between yourselves and a level of trust and once you do that you can really start to have an impact and hopefully make the players better.”

As far as how things have gone on the training pitch, Cowley said: “It’s been good. We’ve still had some that have been away on international duty but everyone is back in the building today (Friday), which is a real positive.

“We’ve had a good opportunity to do some work on the grass and also in the video room speaking about the values and the processes and the game plan and the style and how we intend to play going forward and then taking it out onto the grass and rehearsing that work.

“The players’ attitude and application has been first class. There’s no doubt we’ve got some really talented footballers at the club and what we’ve now got to do is make sure it becomes a good team.

“What’s very important is to hit the reset button and start again. None of us can control what has happened previously because it’s gone, but what we can do is effect the future and it’s been about trying to get some of the values across and putting some rules and boundaries in place so the players know what they can do and what they can’t do.

“Then it’s about trying to find the best game plan and the best way of playing so it sets them up to be successful.”
