Giants safe as Super Senior stars

LOUIS SHOWS FUTURE FOR CLARET AND GOLD

- By JOE BUCK

LOUIS Senior stole the show scoring four tries against Catalans Dragons to help Huddersfield Giants secure their place in Super League.

For huge parts of the game, Simon Woolford’s men looked like succumbing to another defeat, but a late rally in the second-half secured their first home win since May 17.

In the end, they would have stayed up even with a defeat as London Broncos went down following their defeat at Wakefield Trinity.

After a nervy start for Giants, which was to be expected with the stakes so high, they struck first blood after five minutes. It was scored by one of the standout players of 2019 as Senior received an off-load from Paul Clough to touch down in the corner.

The stunning break and try was rounded off by a Jake Wardle touchline conversion and Giants were six points to the good.

Catalans threatened going forward and when a high Sam Tomkins kick was allowed to bounce, the full-back’s retrieval almost helped put his side level, but Senior was on-hand to force a drop-out.

Catalans did not let Giants off the hook, however, and from the resulting set, scored through Lewis Tierney, with Tomkins levelling with the boot. With 17 minutes left of the first half, Senior doubled his tally to give Giants a 10-6 lead.

Matt Frawley’s chip was caught by Robin Brochon but pressure from Senior saw the winger drop the ball and the Giants man pounced.

Straight from the kick-off, however, Lee Gaskell knockedon and then after another cheap penalty, Catalans attacked the Giants line relentlessly.
