A MAN caught drink-driving brought shame on his family because of their religion.

Aquib Hussain was more than double the legal limit when police pulled him over on August 27.

His solicitor said he was ashamed of his behaviour which had left his parents feeling very disappointed in him.

The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that police saw his silver VW Golf on Willow Lane in Birkby and decided to speak with him, although it was not clear why.

When they did though they formed the impression that he was under the influence.

They arrested him following a positive roadside breath test and took him to Huddersfield Police Station. There further tests revealed that he had 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. This is more than double the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Daniel Metcalfe, mitigating, said that his client was ‘very nervous’ to appear in court as he’d never been in trouble before.

He told magistrates: “He is a Muslim gentleman and doesn’t drink as a rule. On the day he met up with some old friends and had, against his better judgement, something to drink.

“He felt fine to drive and was on his way home when police stopped him.

“He feels extremely ashamed, firstly that he’s appearing at court and the religious and ethical problems this is going to cause him within the community. His parents are very disappointed in him and he’s very ashamed to be in court.”

Magistrates banned Hussain, of Norwood Road in Birkby, from driving for 18 months. He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £32 victim surcharge.
