‘Premier League aim for Cowleys’

- By STEVEN CHICKEN

OWEN Coyle acknowledges that Danny and Nicky Cowley face a trying initial period at Town, but believes the brothers will have taken the job because they have designs on eventually taking them back into the top flight.

The Scot previously managed Burnley, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic in the Premier League, and speaking on the BBC’s 5live Football Daily podcast, Coyle spelt out where he thinks the Cowleys’ first priority must lie: goals.

Asked about their step up from League One Lincoln, Coyle replied: “It’s definitely a jump but having said that I think they’ve earned the right to have that opportunity at that level because they’ve done ever so well where they’ve been.

“I listened to them speaking last week and really liked what he had to say, and I think he’s one of them who likes to be involved in everything involved with the club, not just picking a team, so that for me tells you he cares about the club and he’ll care about the community and everything that goes with it.

“That being said, he’ll still be judged on results on the park.

“He’ll think there is a good squad there, but there is no doubt that Huddersfield, the squad they have just now, the confidence is really low because not only can they not win a game at the moment, they can’t even score a goal.

“He has to find a way to get those players full of confidence, get them going again, and try to get in a challenging position.

“Now the great thing about the Championship is you can have a really good week Saturday-TuesdaySaturday and those nine points elevate you up the table.

“So I think that’s the thing they have to look at, to find a way to score goals to win a game, and just bit by bit look [at things].

“But they’ll feel that it’s a chance at Huddersfield to get into the Premier League, because as much as the job they’ve done at Lincoln, they must be ambitious.

“Everybody wants to be at the highest level of the game and the highest level not only domestically but in world football is the Premier League.

“It’s the best league in the world and everybody wants to be involved in it, so I think they’ve looked at it and thought ‘right, this is the time, we’ve had probably opportunities before’.

“But it’s a great chance now to get in at a good club and hopefully get back to the Premier League.”
