Children need freedom to play and not live in fear

THE Government is now wanting to introduce safe havens by having schools open for longer.

And another suggestion is to close roads so that kids can play out near their homes.

This has been in response to gang and knife crime.

Many kids are frightened to venture out, isolated, missing out on their schooldays.

This is one reason why police should be on the streets and not just speeding past in a patrol car.

Some parents are wary of letting their kids out of their sight and, being a grandfather to a few, I understand their feelings.

Reading your paper illustrates that something has gone wrong with society. Kids need time together to grow up, not be around adults all the time.

Are we breeding an atmosphere of fear where our kids don’t feel safe? Obviously our Government thinks so.

So saddened by the fate of a great MP

WHATEVER one’s political views it is deeply saddening that Ken Clarke QC MP has been stripped of his Conservative Party membership.

He has served his country and his party well over many decades and become Father of the House of Commons.

He does not deserve his present fate. LAST week it was my great pleasure to be at the opening night of The Phantom of the Opera presented by Kirklees Youth Theatre Ensemble with a cast all between 11 and 18.

By any standards Phantom is a challenging show and this company of young people more than met that challenge.

Get to the point and save sport of darts

I AGREE with Colin Vause in his letter in Monday’s Examiner (September 16) about the demise of darts.

Myself and David Rapson started Huddersfield United Darts Central Summer League in 1980 and soon had 50 teams from the Huddersfield area.

Within seven years we had 12 divisions and eight teams in each – 96 teams all within reach of the Market Place.

Through the last 39 years we have had a total of 177 teams which have played in this league with many county players and two world champions.

But things have altered drastically over the last 10 years. The young ones don’t support their pubs like they used to. Locals are closingh and darts is dying.

This season, our 40th, we have one division with six teams, one each from Crosland Moor, Berry Brow, Kirkburton, Scissett, Holmfirth and Halifax.

Parking mad way to see law of the road

I READ in the Examiner (September 11) that it is illegal to drive on pavements but not illegal to park on them.

Am I missing something? To park on pavements you must drive on them. Or am I wrong?
