Town like a rudderless ship - Powell

- By STEVEN CHICKEN

ENGLAND coach and former Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell was surprised to see Danny and Nicky Cowley leave Lincoln City to join Huddersfield Town.

Powell, who managed Town between September 2014 and November 2015, was speaking on The Totally Football League Show, and commented that he thought the gig was up when they initially turned down Town’s offer.

He said: “Initially I thought they don’t really want to go there and they felt there would be a bigger and better opportunity - not saying Huddersfield aren’t because it’s a huge club and obviously they’ve had real success recently.

“So I was quite shocked. Whether it’s the financial package, whether it’s the package to get a lot of players in January. They’re like a rudderless ship at the minute.

“I really love the place, the fans were terrific with me, but they’ve lost the art of winning. It’s not only this year, it was last year as well, and it’s a huge job.

“Maybe Danny and Nicky felt ‘OK, we want to face this challenge, we feel ready for it.’

“They’ve done marvellously well at Lincoln and Braintree before that and they see themselves on an upward curve and I think they want to stay on that, but it’s a huge job.

“For them to go Huddersfield, they maybe feel that the ingredients are there for them to lay down their own foundations, their own culture, and hopefully get a group of players that can turn this poor run around.”

Comparing the job they have on their hands to the one Garry Monk faces at Sheffield Wednesday, Powell added: “It’s going to be tougher for them, but I think they’ll get there.”
