- By JOSEPH BUCK

PREPARATIONS for next season have begun already and Huddersfield Giants have announced their first signing.

Kenny Edwards has made the move from France as he departs Catalans Dragons to join up with Huddersfield Giants on a three-year contract.

Simon Woolford is pleased with his new addition and hopes he can provide experience to a young Giants squad.

“We are very excited to be signing someone of the calibre of Kenny Edwards.

“Kenny is a strong ball carrier who we’ve been looking at for some time. He is an aggressive player who will improve our team and bring something different to the club.

“He can play on the edge or in the middle and we are looking forward to having someone who possesses the kind of leadership skills that Kenny has.”

Edwards spent five seasons at Parramatta Eels in the NRL but offfield problems as well as on-field disciplinary issues marred his time at the club.

However, Edwards’ next step in his career was more successful as he joined Catalans in 2018 and was part

of the Dragons side that triumphed in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Woolford has been a longtime admirer of Edwards and he is pleased to have finally got his man signed for Giants.

We’ve tried to secure his services before and tried to bring him to the club last year because we wanted someone with the NRL experience that he had – having played over 70 games for Parramatta.”

Edwards also admitted that he knew about interest in his services from Huddersfield even before he signed for Catalans.

“What first led me to the club was Simon Woolford, he made contact with me last year when I was looking to come across to the Super League and tried a couple times to get me to Huddersfield.”

For Edwards, the decision to join Huddersfield Giants was an easy one for himself and his family.

“Ultimately the opportunity came to really look after my family for the next three years and set us up for the future so, with all those things, I made a decision to make the move. I just want that when I join the group, we have a squad that is willing to work hard together and make ourselves better every day. That’s all we can ask for.

“Obviously it was a tough year this year for Huddersfield but that is finished now and hopefully we have a fully fit healthy squad ready to rip in come the offseason.”

Edwards will also join up with a familiar face at Giants having played with Suaia Matagi at Parramatta and Edwards describes Matagi as a ‘good friend’.
