Look on the bright side – you may live longer

-

OPTIMISTS are likely to live longer. US researchers say they could achieve exceptional longevity by reaching 85 or older. Is that all? Lewina Lee, assistant professor of psychiatry at Boston University, said: “This study has strong public health relevance because it suggests that optimism is one such psychological asset that has the potential to extend human lifespan.”

The research team said optimistic people with a positive outlook may be better able to regulate emotions and behaviour and bounce back from stress and difficulties more easily. They also tend to have healthier habits, taking exercise and being less likely to smoke.

So that walk to the pub on an evening is good for me?

Eric Idle was right, as he sang Look On The Bright Side of Life in Monty Python’s Life of Brian. I’ve been listening to it in various performances on YouTube and it really does put a smile on your face. So that’s on my playlist from now on.

For a break in tempo, I’ll add Judy Garland singing Come On Get Happy and I have to have the happiest of happy songs ever. That’s right, Pharrell Williams and the infectious Happy, that he wrote for the Minions film Despicable Me 2 and which went on to be a global phenomenon.

Try to keep your feet still, try not to smile when it’s playing.

So that’s the music sorted out, how about a few laughs to keep the chuckle muscles working? After all, Ken Dodd lasted until he was 90 so he was doing something right.

Remember, retirement has its positive side. When I was a child I thought “nap time” was punishment. Now, it’s a small holiday. Old people don’t have grey hair. They have wisdom highlights. They’re just very wise. And of course your grandad talks to himself. Sometimes he needs expert advice.

There are those who complain old age is coming at a really bad time. But look on the plus side. Senior citizens have everything they wanted as a teenager, only 60 years later. They don’t have to go to school or work.

They get an allowance every month. They have their own home and don’t have a curfew. Life can be great. If you’re Happy.

Listen to Mr Williams for advice.
