agement. Thomas Cook has been regularly way down the list of consumer associations’ rankings.”

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook’s chief executive, said the firm’s collapse was a “matter of profound regret.”

The company’s failure puts 22,000 jobs at risk worldwide, including 9,000 in the UK.

In Huddersfield, businessman Stephen Knight, of Berry Brow, was one of many to go to the firm’s shop in High Street looking for help. He had booked a holiday to Cuba for 14 nights from November 20 and paid £2,223.

He said: “There’s no-one here, which isn’t ideal. I’m trying to get my money back. It will take me three months to get it back.”

Brenda Simpson, a nurse at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, had booked two weeks in Corfu next May with her partner, and had paid £100.

She said: “I’d come to pay another £350, the full amount was £590. I’m frustrated that there’s no-one here to tell me what to do.”

Mary Wildman, 85, of Lockwood, was due to fly to Malta on October 2 with her partner Ernest Gough, 84.

She said: “We were due to go on holiday for a month and had paid over £3,000.

“I’m a bit too long in the tooth to deal with this kind of thing.

“I came in last Monday to get further details on our transfer and that was bad enough, now this.

“We were assured that we would be OK because we had only booked through Thomas Cook and were using Jetset and Jet2.

“We’ve been looking forward to this all year.”

Mr Sheerman said his office staff were available to help anyone who needed it. His office number is 01484 487970.
