Recycling plant deluged with visitors on open day
SCENES AT WASTE INCINERATOR
BOSSES at Huddersfield’s recycling and waste incineration plant opened their doors to the public – and were inundated with people wanting a rare glimpse inside.
Around 50 people were taken on a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Suez site in Diamond Street, Hillhouse, on Saturday.
But the tour was over-subscribed and around 100 people were left disappointed.
Suez spokesman George Newton said the company was unsure how popular the open day would be.
But families flocked to the plant, with youngsters keen to see what went on inside.
Visitors were shown how recyclable material is processed, separated and baled, ready to be re-used.
They were also shown how nonrecyclable material is incinerated to generate electricity via the ‘energyfrom-waste’ system.
And Mr Newton used the opportunity to tell residents to clean up their act by putting the correct materials in the right recycling collection bins.
He said the failure to do so meant the plant operated at a slower speed and cost taxpayers more money.
And he said it was unpleasant for those workers sifting the material to have to dispose of dirty nappies, dead cats and dogs – and even the occasional snake!
Mr Newton said: “You would be surprised at how many nappies we have come across.
“As well as a lot of dead animals such as dogs and cats, we’ve even had the odd snake and a fox that had been run over.”
Suez regional manager Anna Bell said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have had the chance to open the site up and answer everyone’s questions.
“People are often confused about what we do but I’m pleased that people are interested.”
