Arnhem anniversary’s evacuee memories

So he wants a high level inquiry which I presume he’s funding out of his own pocket.....not! This would cost an absolute fortune out of the public purse and solve nothing for those who are worst affected...! ON this anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem how many of our older Huddersfield population remember the Dutch evacuation of many of their children to England with a number of them being homed in the Huddersfield area?

At that time we lived in Newsome and my parents took in a young boy, Hans Van de Brink, who came from Arnhem and brought horror stories with him of what they had escaped from.

I was five and my brother David 11, we attended Stile Common school and Hans went with us. It was amazing how quickly Hans became acclimatised and his vocabulary of ‘yes, no, please and thank you’ expanded so rapidly he joined in with the other children as he regained his confidence.

I think Hans stayed with us for about six months and unfortunately, shortly following his return, we lost touch with him.

I have often wondered what happened to him and his family, even more so at this anniversary.
