Fans confident in safety of Terriers with boss at helm

WHILE there is obvious concern among supporters for Huddersfield Town’s current plight, there is also optimism for what the rest of the season holds under new manager Danny Cowley.

Following the 4-2 defeat at West Brom, Town hold the joint worst record of any team over their first eight games following relegation from the Premier League.

The Terriers have one point out of 24, the same record as Fulham in 2014-15. Fulham eventually finished 17th that season.

Town fans would settle for that right now and have confidence in the new management to turn things around.

Fan Steve Haywood explained: “I have looked at the new manager (managers) over the past couple of weeks and really I am really impressed,” he said.

“You can clearly see that they won’t suffer fools.

“I think it’s important for Town fans to look at where we were at the start of the season and the slight improvement since the Cowley brothers joined.

“We should not expect to win straight away but give the team time to adjust.

“The improvements are there already and Danny has a great style of management. He has instilled a confidence in me that David Wagner did when he joined the club. We are going to be okay this season.

“The wins and safety will come. It’s hard to watch at the moment but let’s all keep the faith.

“A great appointment by Phil Hodgkinson which should be applauded. Can’t wait for that first win.”

Town are preparing for a home clash with Millwall on Saturday.

David Turner, who follows the club from Nottingham, agrees with fellow fan Haywood.

“We should not worry too much about current league table,” said David. “When Town went up to the Premier League, the first match was against Crystal Palace and we won 3-0.

“After seven matches, Crystal Palace had lost all seven and scored no goals.

“They finished 11th at the end of the season. Plenty of Cowleytime left.”

With reference to the ‘Great Escape’ under Peter Jackson in the 90s, when Town’s first win came against Stoke City in November, Chris Shaw suggests Town supporters should resurrect the film theme to The Great Escape as a song for upcoming games.

He said: “(That season was) One of my fondest memories as a fan!

“I loved that season and still to this day can remember the ball rolling towards the goal from Dalton’s foot (against Stoke). Seemed like an age to get there!!

“Good times .... we can do that again! Maybe time for the fans to start singing the Great Escape theme again as we did in our thousands that season. UTT.”

Mark Crookes, speaking on the Examiner’s Town Facebook page, added: “It’s a long old season Town fans..and as far as I’m concerned the whinging-Brigade/already-relegated misery-gang obviously know zilch about football and the twists and turns/highs and lows that every season brings!!!

“I’ve got three words for ‘em...keep the faith - or you know where the exit is!”
