PEOPLE travelling along the M62 were stuck in traffic for hours yesterday after a major accident in which a car crashed into a lamppost on the central reservation.

The incident happened at around 11.20am and saw the Air Ambulance scrambled to the scene, along with police and paramedics.

It caused major delays in both directions, with traffic held to allow the Air Ambulance to land.

Last night, there remained heavy congestion on the westbound carriageway, despite two lanes reopening, while all traffic was held on the eastbound stretch.

The picture tweeted by North West Motorway Police shows the red car completely crumpled against the lamppost, with the passenger side of the car bearing the brunt of the force.

There was only one person in the car at the time of the crash and they have been taken to hospital by land ambulance where they continue to be assessed.

Alongside the Twitter photo, North West Motorway Police said: “Just the driver on board who has survived and was taken to hospital with injuries.”

North West Motorway Police suggested that the crash was caused by ‘a combination of poor driving and wet weather’.

All traffic on the eastbound lane continued to be held after the accident, with queues snaking back for almost 10 miles.

There were only two lanes open on the eastbound carriageway as contractors continued to carry out essential repairs works at the site of the incident.
