HUDDERSFIELD Art Society’s 123rd exhibition in Huddersfield Art Gallery was officially opened by the Mayoress of Kirklees, Noreen Hussain.

The entries for this year’s show broke all records with 168 pictures submitted by 63 artists.

Barnsley artist and art lecturer Richard Kitson had the difficult task of selecting the 105 works which appear in the show.

The overall quality of the work submitted has encouraged the society to consider mounting an exhibition of the unselected work, in the style of the Parisian “Salon de refuses”, in the Thrift Shop in the Packhorse Gallery, which is currently used as an exhibition and workspace for Huddersfield Art Society members.

Presentations were made to the winners of several prizes, these included:

The Eleanor Sykes Award for best work in the show, which went to Bruce Mulcahy for his oil painting of A Spring Afternoon by Lock Eck.

The Pat Pridmore Memorial Award for painting from direct observation, went to Kin Lee for his oil painting of A View near Ramsden Reservoir.

The Calder Graphics Award for best work by a first-time exhibitor went to Amanda Castle for her work Wasteland in coloured pencil and primer;

The John Woods Award for Creativity was presented to Louise Ventris for her oil painting Lucilia Sericata.

On display in the gallery is a banner depicting the public’s favourite picture from the 2018 exhibition, Bob Hryndyj’s Lock 34 Marsden.

Most of the work in the exhibition is for sale and members will be in the gallery to greet visitors and handle sales.

On Saturday, October 19 members will hold an art market within the gallery where they will be selling small items of artwork.

Full details can be found on the Creative Kirklees website and the Huddersfield Art Society website and Facebook pages.
