‘Results will come under the Cowleys’

- By MEL BOOTH

“We have a great squad of players and it’s just changing that confidence to get us back up the table.”

Manchester United product Campbell, 32, signed for Town in August and missed the traumas of relegation which left many of the remaining players with confidence levels shot to pieces.

“The club was in the Premier League for the last two seasons but for the last 18 months they have been under the cosh so it’s always going to take some time to get the confidence back,” said Campbell. “The new manager has come in and he and Nicky are super positive and working hard with us to get their philosophies across.

“What makes it easy is that they are really nice guys, really easy to get on with. We are starting to see the effects of a harder training regime, getting fitter and everyone knowing their job a little bit better.”

Town turned in a much-improved display against Millwall, taking the lead through Campbell before a m mistake by keeper Kamil Gr Grabara allowed Matt Smith to eq equalise before the break.

“We knew we needed to work ha hard after the disappointment of the last game,” said Campbell. “W “We had positive things which w we wanted to bring into this ga game.

“We scored first but conceded ju just before half-time which ki killed us a little bit. We came out in the second half and we really h had a go at them, causing them p problems.

“Then they had a man sent off and it looked like we were going to nick it at the end.”

As Town looked for a winner there were two loud appeals for a penalty, including one where Adama Diakhaby appeared to be pushed over in the box.

Campbell didn’t bother getting into the rights or wrongs of the decisions but admitted he would always make his opinions known to the match officials.

“There were a few penalty shouts,” he said. “In the heat of the game I am always going to be hammering the ref or the linesman, whoever needs to get it I am giving it to them! That’s just the way I play.

“I would have taken any of them as a penalty but he didn’t give any and you can’t let that effect you.

“It’s swings and roundabouts but when you’re having a bad time it feels like those decisions don’t go well for you. But hopefully we are past that and we are going to get a bit of luck from now on and we’ll get six penalties next game!”

Campbell reckons Town are starting to turn the corner and said: “It’s been 18 months of hard work and a lot of bad results.

“For me I have come in and I am always positive, so that 18 months didn’t effect me in the slightest but you could see that impact day to day in some of the lads.

“It’s just about shaking that off and getting everyone believing they are good players. A lot were in the Premier League and a lot were here to get them into the Premier League.

“You don’t become a bad player overnight, though mentally sometimes you might think that.

“We played well last week and we were excellent at times against Millwall. We have a game Tuesday and a game Saturday and we need to push ourselves to the limit before the international break.

“We have something to build on now. We have drawn a game and we looked like we were going to win it, which is a positive.

“I don’t know how long it’s been since we were looking that strong for the last 20 or 30 minutes of a game.

“The lads are all together. Everyone is digging deep and working hard for each other, and it’s not just the 11 on the field.

“It’s about keeping focused, keeping working hard and believing in the process.” PHIL Hodgkinson has highlighted the positive influence Danny and Nicky Cowley are already having at Huddersfield Town - and he is confident results will come.

The chairman, speaking in his programme notes for the Millwall match, thanked supporters for their backing and spoke of the work of the new management duo.

“Today is the third game of Danny and Nicky Cowley’s tenure as our management team and, although we haven’t recorded the results that everyone targeted, I firmly believe you can already see the impact that they have had on the team,” said Hodgkinson (pictured). “After a full week of training with the players, I could see as clear a game plan as we’ve had this calendar year in last weekend’s game at West Bromwich Albion.

“That plan worked perfectly for an hour, but then we made mistakes and were punished by one of the best teams in the division. Despite the result, I took confidence from that game.

“Danny and Nicky’s influence over the team will only further as the weeks pass.

“Every person at Huddersfield Town is doing all they can to try and positively affect the players and, ultimately, the results.

“We are under no illusions whatsoever that the responsibility sits with us to improve matters.”
