Fans running out of Gas

IT’S an institution for Huddersfield Town fans wanting a prematch drink but The Gas Sports and Social Club is set to close at the end of the season.

The Gas Club, in Gasworks Street just off Leeds Road, will shut for good on April 25, 2020, the last game of the season against West Brom.

It was a popular place for Town fans and often for away fans too who happily paid £1 for entrance.

In an email, the club’s committee says they have dedicated over 150 years of their lives to running it and no longer wish to do so.

They say the licence is due for renewal in December “and the present committee does not wish to renew it.”

“Without a licence the club cannot operate, however, if anyone is interested in taking the licence then please make yourself known at the bar and the requirements will be explained.

“The committee posts of treasurer, secretary and bar/ cellarman will also become vacant.

“Again, if you are interested in taking these positions please ask at the bar for details.

“The club will continue to operate as normal and bookings will be honoured as agreed until the 25th April.

“The club will also be available for functions up to this date.”

Finally the committee concludes that they would be delighted to help anyone interested in taking on the positions and helping the club stay alive but stress that unless they are forthcoming then the club will shut on April 25.

One Town fan who has been supporting the Terriers for decades said: “I have had some very happy memories there over the years with some great end-of-season parties when the beer has flowed and the band has played.

“However, it is a bit out on a limb and it was the kind of place I only went into very occasionally, so I can see why, perhaps, its time has come.”
