Simpson vows to give his all in Town shirt

played a full 90 minutes. I have played here before, but now for the home side. I’ll try my best for the lads, the fans and the manager.

“It was unfortunate that we didn’t get the points I thought we deserved.

“I was flying into the boards trying to keep the ball in play. I am not 100 per cent match fit yet but that will come. I will give my best and there is more to come and I have got more to give.

“The new manager has come in and I can’t speak for the start of the season. However you could probably see what he was trying to implement into the team, especially in the second half where we played some good stuff.

“That is what he wants, he wants us to be brave on the ball and we have the players to do it. He trusts us. Yes, the table doesn’t lie but like I said in spells we were playing some good stuff.

“Nothing can replicate match fitness, but I was just delighted to get through my debut and we got a point. I think we probably should have won, but I really wanted us to get a clean sheet. I am a defender and I want us to keep clean sheets but it wasn’t to be.”

Simpson trained with both West Brom and Huddersfield before agreeing a deal with Town until the end of the season.

The full-back spoke candidly about those lonely times in the gym to keep up his fitness.

He said: “It is difficult, it’s new to me. I went on a couple of training camps. You come back and you’re waiting for things to happen and things don’t happen. It’s just football.

“Sometimes I’d wake up in a morning thinking I don’t want to do the gym today but I have to. I think the work I put in on my own through the summer while everyone was back at pre-season helped.

“I have done a few weeks of training and I think that has all helped for me to get through 90 minutes.

“I trained at West Brom for about 10 days and then I came here. I was just getting up and doing anything I could. Boxing and the treadmill was my best friend and it was lonely at times. I had to do it and you can only do it for yourself in those moments. All that has paid off for me to get through the 90 minutes. “Everything happens for a reason and I am from Manchester, I know this is a good club and it’s down the road. The new manager has come in and I like him and Nicky.” The Salford-born player started his career at Premier League giants Manchester United, coming out of the Red Devils academy.
