-

A MAN lashed out and punched a police officer – as he arrested him for assault.

Upset Kristafa Spencer lunged at the PC as he tried to handcuff him over the alleged attack.

The 33-year-old was found guilty following a trial of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

Police had been called to his address in Alandale Road, Bradley, shortly before 10am on March 9.

Prosecutor Lisa Evans said: “They attended to a report of a domestic incident (and) there was a male inside with facial injuries.

“The officer spoke with the defendant in a different room and he became very agitated.

“He came into the face of the officer and was jumping up and down, trying to get to the other male in the kitchen.”

Due to Spencer’s behaviour he angry and managed to break free from the officer’s hold.

“He stood up, lunging at the officer. They both fell onto a window and ended up on the floor.

“At that point Mr Spencer punched the officer. The officer struck Mr Spencer in the face and managed to gain control of the situation and restrain him.”

His solicitor Sonia Kidd said that she was unable to mitigate fully on his behalf as he still denied any wrongdoing.

She explained that Spencer suffered significant facial injuries himself in the row and had to have hospital treatment.

Mrs Kidd said: “It’s something he was upset about as he felt it was not taken into account at his trial.”

Kirklees magistrates sentenced him to a community order with 25 rehabilitation activity days aimed at addressing his offending behaviour.

He will have to pay £300 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
