BRIGHOUSE & Rastrick Band’s iconic Massed Bands series continues this month – thanks to a former musical director who came to the rescue.

The guest conductor who was due to take part had to pull out due to illness, throwing plans into disarray.

However, former musical director David Hirst was drafted in to ensure the show would go on – despite now living in Gloucestershire.

David had no hesitation in stepping in and also sticking with the ‘Proms Evening’ theme.

David first played as a youngster with his local Holme Silver Band, quickly making his mark as a cornet player.

He made huge strides forward and, aged just 14, he moved to Yorkshire Imperial Metals Band and two years later to Black Dyke Band on soprano cornet.

After studies at the University of Huddersfield he gradually took an interest in conducting, steadily moving up the scale until being appointed to lead Brighouse and Rastrick in 1994.

David will prove a natural fit, in familiar surroundings, for the Massed Bands concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday, October 26, when the audience will hear a popular programme including rousing Strauss pieces as well some relaxing slower melodies.

The evening will peak with all the pomp and majesty expected of ‘Proms’ conclusions when vocalist Rachel Little will lead the patriotic singing relished by many.

Tickets are available from the town hall and other Kirklees outlets. Tel: 01484 225755 or go to www.kirkleestownhalls.co.uk.
