Cowley loves it when plan comes together

family and my friends’ to have finally found his way to the club 13 years after making his professional debut for United.

Cowley added: “He’s a great character. He’s had a great career but he wants to add to it.

“This is his hometown club and he went to school at Lowerhouses, which is just around the corner, and for him to come home I think is really special for him.

“But he wants to add value and he wants to contribute and he sees a club that when he arrived was in a difficult moment and he’s really motivated to try to help the club out of that moment.

“He’s been great in the dressing room.

“You know, when your top players are your hardest-working players, it makes it very, very easy as a manager.”

Campbell spent two seasons at Hull and last year claimed 12 goals and six assists in 39 Championship appearances.

The one-cap England man initially made his name as a pacy striker playing off the shoulder of defenders, but Cowley believes there are now a lot more strings to the 32-year-old’s bow.

He said: “You have to evolve and the great thing for us with Fraizer is he can come loose and he can come and link and combine and bring others into the game.

“But he also has the pace and the timing of his runs to stretch and get behind opponents’ defences – and in the box he’s so sharp.

“When I look back particularly at last season at Hull, it wasn’t just his goals, it was his number of assists and the amount of goals he was involved in.

“Normally with goalscorers it’s just about them but for Fraizer it’s always about the team and we like that quality.” DANNY Cowley has unwrapped the Town game plan he believes can inspire victory against Hull City today.

The new John Smith’s Stadium boss has reviewed the victory at Stoke City thoroughly and, while he accepts it wasn’t a free-flowing performance, he believes the players showed many of the characteristics he wants.

Town now have a chance to record back-to-back wins going into the international break.

So how does Cowley get the positives from Town’s 1-0 win at Stoke – secured with a late strike from sub Juninho Bacuna – to carry through into 90 John Smith’s Stadium minutes against 13th-placed Championship side Hull?

“That’s the challenge,” said Cowley.

“Win, lose or draw we always learn and we have had a good opportunity to review the game at Stoke and look at it in departments.

“We looked at what was good and have tried to work out why we won – because if you work

THE latest episode of our Huddersfield Town podcast ‘Ooh To Be A...’ is out now! How significant is the win over Stoke? How do we rate the Cowleys after four games? And where do Town go out the ‘whys’ then you are more likely to be able to replicate what you have done.

“I think the reason we won was because we stayed true to the game plan.

“We defended re-starts much better. We had nine corners to defend and we won seven first contacts – so we tweaked what we did defensively and it really worked for us.

“I think we also played with a huge amount of determination and grit, fought for every ball, put our bodies on the line when necessary and carried some threat on the counter.

“That was why we were able to win, but I have said to the players that 90 per cent is resilience, determination, grit and togetherness and 10pc is the game plan and tactical part.

“If they can bring those qualities every week, then we will always be competitive.”
