Netherton’s six of the best claim title double

VETS RIVALS LINDLEY LIB FALL SHORT BY A SINGLE POINT

- BOWLS By JEFF JACKLIN

NETHERTON Con have retained their title as the Huddersfield Veterans 6-Man League Section A Champions.

They clocked a 6-1 home win - the same as their perpetual title chasers from Lindley Lib A - to keep the gap between the two teams at one point and hand them a second successive title. That win over Oakfield was enough to relegate Oakfield along with Farnley Tyas.

The destination of the Section B title also went to the last day when the top two went head-to-head to sort out the title race. Lockwood Con made home advantage pay as they ran out 5-2 victors over Longwood who finished the season four points behind their opponents. There was an amazing last day escape from rel

egation for Golcar Lib. They started the day four points behind Holmfirth who they needed to overtake to stay in Section B for another year.

Golcar Lib were matched away at mid-table Clayton West and needed at least five points to stave off the dreaded drop but having only won once away from home all season the odds were stacked against them.

However fate intervened and they ran out 5-2 winners. Holmfirth lost 1-6 at Golcar C&BC to end level on points with Golcar Lib but 23 points lighter on the Aggregate For front to send them down.

With all these matters resolved the only outstanding matter was the home of the Section C Wooden Spoon. A 5-2 home win for Shepley B enabled them to pull away from Brockholes B who finished bottom for a third consecutive season.

The Veterans League Half-Year Meeting will be held at Paddock I&C at 2pm on Monday 14 October.

The Thornhill Open Pairs is being held on Sunday.
