Lawrence is proud to wear Jamaica jersey

DESPITE being over a month since Giants secured safety against Catalans Dragons, four of their players are back in action this weekend.

England Knights will face Jamaica at Headingley with Matty English, Darnell McIntosh and Kruise Leeming all selected for England.

Facing them will be Huddersfie­ld’s own and now Jamaica’s own Michael Lawrence.

Lawrence will represent Jamaica for the first time on Sunday and is proud to be given the chance to represent the Reggae Warriors.

He said: “It’ll be a proud moment for me when I’m able to pull on the Jamaican jersey at the weekend.

“I’ve never seen my parents as proud when I told them I was thinking about representi­ng Jamaica and that they’ve qualified for the World Cup and I’m going to be a part of it.

“My mum and dad were both born in Jamaica and brought up there until they were teenagers, when they came over here.

“To represent my parents and grandparen­ts and my heritage, there’s no prouder accolade really and I’m really looking forward to the weekend.”

Jamaica qualified for the 2021 World Cup after beating USA last November and their profile has slowly risen ever since.

This week, it was announced that World Cup winner Jason Robinson will be involved with the Jamaican side heading into 2021, further promoting its brand.

This is something Lawrence is excited to continue and has called on the communitie­s in and around West Yorkshire to help Jamaican rugby league flourish.
