In-form Field up against Wharfedale in league and cup double

- By COREY TOPPING

HUDDERSFIELD Rugby Club face Wharfedale at home in a League and Yorkshire Cup encounter this Saturday at Lockwood Park.

The home side come into this contest after back-to-back league victories whilst Wharfedale lost to Sheffield Tigers at home last weekend.

Field’s performance at Preston saw two last-minute tries, one for either side, leading to Field taking a dramatic victory.

The Yorkshire Cup follows the same full-time score as the League result, unless the scores are tied in which case there is extra time for one of the sides to take the victory in the Cup competition and advance to the next round.

Fly-half Cail Cookland was named National II North player of the week for his performance in last week’s win and Field will look to continue their slick form this weekend.

Head coach Gareth Lewis reflected on last weekend’s win, saying: “It was great to get the win last week. The lads really pulled out a performance and we’ve finally started to gather a little momentum.

“We know we still have plenty of work to do but if we can reach those levels consistently we’ll be a tough team to beat.”

With both sides tied on 13 points in the table, a victory for either side would be huge and after Field’s last two games a third victory on the run could spell trouble for the rest of the league moving forward.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s West Yorkshire Derby clash at Lockwood Park, Lewis said: “Wharfedale are a good side and have plenty of quality.

“Our defence had the aggression I’ve been looking for and we forced Preston into mistakes which ultimately lead to our tries.”

And while Field may not have started the season firing on all cylinders, the squad‘s belief in themselves from pre-season still remains and can be used as a tool to propel them forward.
