Our democracy is now proven to be worthless

CHARACTERISING the “Benn Act” as a mere surrender is misleading, because it is a direct attack on democracy too.

It is true that no sane person would negotiate for something even as trivial as a car or a house on the same basis as the Benn Act gives away control to the EU over the fate of our entire nation.

Being unable to walk away from the EU’s bad deals entrenches either a Remain Withdrawal treaty, or further delays. Of course that suits remain MPs, like Hillary Benn. But maybe Boris Johnson too.

Surrendering to the EU so comprehensively has become a habit of Conservative Prime Ministers - Ted Heath in 1972, John Major in 1992, Theresa May in 2018/19, and possibly Boris Johnson today.

This is a far cry from 2015 when Parliament gave the people the legal right to decide whether to remain in or leave the EU. Parliament did not limit leave to a “deal”.

We were told that leave meant the EU would cease to control our laws, borders, fish, trade, and money. We were promised our choice would be respected and implemented. Leave won. Or so we thought.

Now democracy is only effected where the people are sovereign, not Parliament.

Yet, by cheating and lies, the remain establishment has made our leave votes worthless. The Benn Act is only the latest example. And, notably, Boris failed to even try to halt it.

That may unite the Tories, but means the UK continues to be an EU colony – a vassal, with a worthless democracy.

Brexit is tough to put others off leaving

MANY thanks to your correspondent SGG (

for setting out the EU’s democratic policy and assurance of full-debate of its treaties.

I admit I may have misunderstood items written by journalists and politicians, who expressed concern over Brussels arranging the toughest possible Brexit, thus discouraging others, alongside an aim to keep Britain in the customs union, with neither voice nor vote on trade policy or domestic law.

One former Greek finance minister described an earlier version of the withdrawal agreement as the kind of deal that a nation signs only after being defeated at war. Occasionally, the jargon of democracy seems to align with descriptions of Edward Longshank’s attempts to smash the spirit of Scotland’s independence.

How can referendum now be invalid?

I FAIL to see how SGG comes to the conclusion that the referendum is invalid after three years. The dictionary definition of a referendum is : a general vote by the electorate on a single political question which has been referred to them for a direct decision.

Why should this become invalid after a number of years ?

The government decided to act on this decision even though SGG thinks us numpties cannot really be entrusted with such decisions without becoming anarchists.

Time to put an end to wasteful HS2

NEARLY two years ago I wrote expressing my concerns that the estimated budget for the proposed HS2 was grossly undervalued at £56bn.

Now a report prepared by an official review panel set up by Boris Johnson has announced that the bill for HS2 will cost UK taxpayers £106bn.

The MP for Normanton Yvette Cooper has been asked many times to listen to the 85% of her elected constituency and speak out about the absurd and astronomical costs involved with HS2 she repeatedly refused to question the government.

Is it now time that she spoke out?

Should she now (once Parliament has reopened) demand answers from the Government as what their intentions are regarding the issues surrounding HS2 ?

Let’s put an end to further wasteful spending of taxpayers money on a project that quite literally is a ‘White Elephant’ – a train that’s going nowhere.
