BOSS COWLEY COULD BOLSTER TOWN SQUAD WITH NEW SIGNINGS IN JANUARY

- By MEL BOOTH

HUDDERSFIELD Town made a couple of swoops into the lower leagues during the summer transfer window - and don’t rule out a repeat in January.

Boss Danny Cowley has been involved in eight of the top nine divisions in English football so is well versed in the quality offered by leagues down the pyramid.

Work on scouting never stops and Cowley used the last international break to look at a couple of targets in the Peterborough side, when they played against his old team Lincoln City.

One of those may well be Marcus Maddison, but Cowley clearly isn’t frightened to follow the path with brought the likes of Reece Brown and Josh Koroma to the club before this season.

“We watched Peterborough against Lincoln, which was a good opportunity for us to have a look at some players in the Peterborough team, which is certainly something we’ve wanted to do,” explained Cowley.

“We are very aware of all the young players we have and we have very good connections in the non-league ourselves.

“We had a couple of those boys (already at Town) played for us in a squad game last week, which was a real positive.

“We managed to pick up the Under 23s game against Tranmere here, when we beat a strong Tranmere team 3-0, which was also very positive because we were very young on the day.

“So we are slowly getting to know the younger players at the club - and we have certainly liked what we have seen so far.”

He added: “What you are always trying to do with your young players is to try and create the right pathway for them.

“You have to respect that when you look at our 17s, 19s and 23s, the gap from the top of our academy to Championship level is absolutely huge.

“So to set up young players for success you have to make sure the stepping stones are in place to allow them to achieve that success.

“Having lived the levels like I have myself, I know the difference between the National League to League Two and even League One - and then the jump from League One to the Championship is the biggest one of all in my opinion.

“So, we know that our young players are out and at their right levels for their learning at the moment, but we also know we have to create the stepping stones for them to get to the first team.”
