“As a back four we do a lot of work and there’s a lot of communicat­ion and helping each other out,” said Simpson.

“If someone makes a mistake your mates are looking out for you. Hopefully we can put a message out that against our back four you will have to work hard to try and score.”

The defenders weren’t happy to concede a late goal in the 2-1 victory over Barnsley on Saturday and Simpson added: “Even though we won the game we were disappoint­ed that we didn’t keep a clean sheet because that’s what we want, and because that’s just the way we are.”

The win lifted Town out of the bottom three and made it six matches unbeaten.

Simpson, 32, a Premier League title winner with Leicester, made his debut in the first of those matches, a 1-1 draw with Millwall, and has yet to taste defeat in a Town shirt.

Simpson added: “We are on a great run but it’s important we don’t get ahead of ourselves.

“We need to keep pushing ourselves and keep the run going. We still have lots of areas to improve but we have seen we are difficult to beat which is always a positive.

“There are parts of our game that we need to improve on but it’s coming.”

Simpson said new managerial duo Danny and Nicky Cowley were getting their ideas across to the players. “When we’ve had two games a week you don’t get much time on the training pitch to work on things but everybody is taking it on board. The important thing is we are fighting for each other on the pitch,” he said.

Simpson hailed the growing spirit in the camp and the battling qualities emerging on the field.
