Community learning is ‘good’
ADULT and community learning in Kirklees has been given the stamp of approval by education watchdog Ofsted.
A detailed inspection of the services managed by Kirklees Council found that they were “good” in every respect.
The council provides adult learning programmes with the aim of supporting people to aspire and achieve greater independence. Courses focus on personal development, volunteering, family learning and digital inclusion, which helps people to use devices such as computers and smart phones.
Ofsted found that adult and community learning in Kirklees was boosting people’s confidence and resilience, helping many learners to improve their mental health and well-being.
Inspectors also highlighted that learners:
■Enjoy an inclusive environment;
■Develop a broad range of personal and social skills;
■Gain greater independence;
■Develop new knowledge, skills and behaviours;
■Develop a better understanding of the world in which they live and are able to play a more active role in society.
The courses are delivered by eight groups who are overseen by the council. Cabinet member for learning, aspiration and communities, Clr Carole Pattison, said: “Adult learning changes lives, so we are delighted to have such excellent standards here in Kirklees. Ofsted have seen our goal is to raise aspirations, especially in disadvantaged communities, and to promote lifelong learning.
“We want people to value learning throughout their lives, and we aim to make education accessible to local people so that they find new opportunities.
“As well as new skills, many learners benefit from increased selfesteem and a better quality of life.”
