Where Wagner’s originals are now
IT’S four years since David Wagner picked his first Huddersfield Town team.
That was against Sheffield Wednesday on November 21, 2015, when the Terriers were beaten 3-1 at Hillsborough.
Much has happened, of course, for Wagner and for Town since that 90 minutes in South Yorkshire - and it’s worth noting only one of the matchday 18 is still on the John Smith’s Stadium playing roster,
Jonathan Hogg, who was among the subs.
We all know what has happened to Hoggy - he has become a Championship promotion winner, Premier League regular and now essential midfield component for new manager Danny Cowley.
But what of the other 17? Here, we take a look...
The experienced keeper is now 38 years old but still playing, with Shrewsbury Town, where he is contracted until the end of this season.
The Dubliner spent three years with Town, making 14 starts and he now has more than 600 career appearances to his credit.
The 27-year-old former club captain left Town in the summer to join Championship rivals Stoke City, where he is contracted until 2022.
Smith spent six years with Town, having joined from Manchester City for the
Under 23 side and was a popular member of Wagner’s promotionwinning side.
Captain on the day, the central defender is now Town’s first-team coach and has been with the club over five years.
Huddy was caretaker boss before Danny and Nick Cowley arrived to take over full-time from Jan Siewert.
The 33-yearold central defender spent twoand-a-half years with Town and played as a substitute in the Championship play-off final victory over Reading at Wembley.
He went on to make three Premier League appearances before leaving to join Middlesbrough in January 2018. He was part of Sheffield United’s promotion-winning squad last season before joining Luton Town on a free transfer.
Now 24, Dempsey is on the books of Fleetwood Town in League One, where he has made 13 league and cup appearances this season.
Signed from Carlisle United, he spent less than two years with Town and joined Fleetwood initially on loan before a permanent move in May 2017.
An experienced midfielder with Town, he retired from playing after the first Premier League season and is now the Under 19 coach at PPG Canalside.
He joined Town from Middlesbrough in 2015 and went on to win a third career promotion to the top flight, having achieved the feat twice with Sunderland. He also helped Stoke City reach the 2011 FA Cup Final.
The defensive midfielder, now 26, is currently in League One with leaders Ipswich Town.
He spent a year on loan with Town from Wigan Athletic and became a popular player, making 31 league and cup appearances and scoring five goals.
The 29-yearold wingman, who had an injuryplagued six years with Town, is now with former boss Simon Grayson at Blackpool, where he is contracted until the end of the season.
Scannell joined Town from Crystal Palace in 2012 and made 172 senior appearances. He had a loan to Burton before moving on to Bradford City and now Blackpool.
Currently without a club having been on the books at crisis club Bury. Now 26, he spent last season on loan with Southend United in League One, making 30 appearances in all competitions.
Now 31, the Gambian winger joined Town on loan from Brighton and made 15 league appearances, scoring three goals.
He also played on loan for Leeds before joining Nottingham Forest and having further loans at Ipswich and Apol Limassol. Carayol is now with Adana Demirspor in the Turkish second tier.
The 29-year-old led Town’s promotion-winning attack in the Championship, before moving on to join Premier League Burnley in August 2017 in a £5m deal.
Wells is now in his second loan spell with QPR and appeared against Town as a substitute earlier
