TWO MEN ON RUN AFTER SUSPECTED MACHETE ATTACK
VICTIM ARRESTED AT SCENE
POLICE were last night hunting two men suspected of a machete attack in Birkby.
They are suspected of slashing a man in the head with the blade.
Police were searching for the suspects following the incident in the Blacker Road area of Birkby at about 2.20pm yesterday.
Officers closed part of Blacker Road and Bay Hall Common Road for about three hours while investigations got underway. The cordon was removed just before 5.30pm.
The 26-year-old victim, who suffered a cut to his head, was arrested at the scene.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the male suspects were reported to have been seen running towards St Johns Road.
He said: “The first is described as wearing a black bomber jacket with black bottoms and trainers. He was also in possession of a bladed weapon. The second man is described as wearing a cream t-shirt and a black jacket.
“A road has been closed while officers conduct their examinations and CCTV enquiries are ongoing.”
The scene was close to the Masjid Omar mosque, which cancelled children’s classes due to safety fears.
Sadiq Mohammed, owner of a DIY hardware shop next to sealed off scene, said: “We came out of the mosque and police asked if they could check our CCTV, which they did, but I don’t know if they found anything.”
Witnesses were asked to contact the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 0916 of 17/12.
They could also get in touch via the live chat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
