Emley seeking win to put them in touch with leaders

it.’ He’s not just a footballer, he’s an ambassador too.

He gets involved off the field, he’s visiting poorly children, training kids and turning up at community functions and the like.

He was the first player to put his hand up for a recent live podcast we did in front of a studio audience and, in the summer, when most players want time off, he visited the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to further his understanding of the area. We love him.

I THINK that’s covered above, but he’s a great lad. He’s always good for an interview, always honest and open.

When he threw his shirt into the crowd against Bolton I dare wager a few fans cried a little tear.

“He’s been with us 18 months but he’s left a huge impression on the club.

If anything, he’s been too good. Max Melbourne is an exciting young player who just hasn’t had a look-in since joining on loan because Toff doesn’t get injured, doesn’t cry off games and is always to be relied upon.

I’ve spoken to him a lot off the field, too. In December, I was nominated for a Football Supporter’s Federation Award.

On the night, despite us only really meeting at events and for interviews, he texted me to wish me luck.

That’s Toff – connected to fans.

and

TO play him anywhere than on the left would be a fallacy.

I could see him operating on the left wing as well as wing-back – a bit like Marcus Maddison in that respect I suppose.

EMLEY travel to Oldham today as they visit Chadderton in a bid to continue their North West Counties Division One North promotion push, with a 3pm kick off.

With some congestion building up on the league table and teams all beating each other, points are going to be crucial between now and the end season.

A win for Emley could move them to within three points of leaders Lower Breck, who are at home to Garstang, with a game in hand.

But only five points separate fourthplace Shelley and AFC Darwen in 10th, and bottom-of-the-table Steeton.

Chadderton are in that group just outside the top four and so will be desperate for the three points themselves and try and make a push for the promotion places.

There’s not a lot to separate the sides form wise, both are unbeaten in their past three league games, Emley are second and Chadderton a close third in the form table, so both teams are more than capable of getting the result they need.

Emley won the reverse fixture 1-0 in August thanks to a wonder strike from top scorer Rob Bordman.

The Pewits, meanwhile, had Wednesday night’s Sheffield Cup game at Worsbrough Bridge postponed due to a waterlogged pitch in Barnsley.

Shelley, who also saw their midweek game – a league clash at home to AFC Liverpool – postponed, are at home today, hosting Pilkington.

They sit just six points behind local rivals Emley and have a game in hand on the Pewits.

Also with games in hand are Golcar United – who have played just 19 league matches this season while most have played between 21 and 23 – and they will be hoping to get into the action as they travel to AFC Blackpool.
