A glimpse into one billionaire’s grand design

-

WITH jaw-dropping levels of excess that will induce eye rolls across Britain, this insight into a self-made billionaire’s build is bonkers.

John Caudwell, who sold Phones 4u in 2006 for just under £1.5bn, snapped up the Mayfair property for £87m and is now transforming it with a £65m refurb.

When it’s done, the decadent home will be worth more than £250m and is one of the most expensive homes to ever be renovated in Britain.

As cameras join the build in its last crucial stages, the details of this grand design are OTT utterly fascinating.

There’s an ornate ballroom, conservatory, spa, gym, pool, games room, cinema and a nifty piece of kit that stacks eight cars underground, moving them up and down with a flick of a button.

In one of the many bedrooms, an Emperor size bed means you could starfish without touching the person next to you, and £28,000 of gold leaf decorates the residence.

But with such a complex design comes many, many challenges.

In one dining room, which will feature a river with live fish, workers wonder whether or not they can bust the £5,000 fish budget.

And in the pool room, builders are, er, bricking it, as they don’t want to break the expensive ‘wall of lava’ art installation.

Meanwhile, John, who wants to move in in four months, likes to pop in regularly to “micro manage everything”.

This is not good news for an already anxious team… and at the end, will the poor billionaire be happy?
