Giants ‘buzzing’ as hard yards in training pay off
DESPITE being just three games into the Super League season, Joe Wardle – an ever-present so far – has made some of Huddersfield’s ambitions for 2020 known.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Wigan Warriors, the first at the John Smith’s Stadium this season, the centre made one of their key aims clear.
“We’ve set a goal to be the best defensive side in Super League, that’s what we want to be known as and we’re definitely on the right road to be known as that at the moment,” he said.
“It’s obviously still early days and a lot can still change, but everyone’s bought into that and everyone’s enjoying doing it as well.”
Simon Woolford’s men have conceded just 26 points so far this season and handsomely boast the best defensive record in Super League.
This effort in defence, and the wins it has allowed Giants to get has, according to Wardle, created a great atmosphere around the camp.
“At the moment, everyone is buzzing around the place, everyone is coming in and doing that little bit extra and they are giving that little bit more,” he said.
“When results are going your way because of the effort you are putting in everyone is buzzing.”
For Wardle, the improvement compared to last year’s disastrous start has been down to the work on the training ground and a team meeting held at the end of last season. He said: “How things have gone in the last couple of years, as a group we weren’t happy with it. We had a good talk at the end of last year and we wanted to rectify a few things.
“It’s more of an attitude thing, we’ve changed our attitude and we’ve changed how we want to train.
