MORE than 30 Holmfirth Harriers braved the thick mud to race in the English National Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.

The Under-17 ladies were first in action over a distance of 5km. Olivia Dyson led the Holmfirth challenge and finished in 108th in 25mins 33secs, with Lydia Throssell 168th (27.14) and Mollie Scaramuzza 216th (29.11).

The Under-13 boys raced over 3km. Alden Collier, of Chiltern Harriers, won the race in 14.21. Holmfirth’s first counter was Declan Levay in 120th (16.32), followed by Jamie Stewart 182nd (17.16), Callum Noble 235th (17.44), Harry Gilligan 247th (17.52), Luke Hirst 366th (21.08) and Alexander Gilligan 385th (25.44). The team finished 28th out of 44.

The Under-15 girls raced over 4kms. Imogen Wolf and Isabel Richardson were not far behind the leaders on the first lap, but unfortunately Isabel had to retire.

Imogen was first counter in 41st (20.51) with Annie McLean 130th (22.14) and Elena Inch, who suffered on the final lap, 182nd (22.58). The final counter was Elizabeth Gilligan in 393rd (34.33) to bring the team home in 25th.

The senior women raced over 8kms and after a very competitive race, Leedsbased Anna Moller of Aldershot Farnham and District won in 32.59. Holmfirth had a superb result with Katie Walshaw enjoying the muddy conditions, finishing 32nd in 36.31. Twins Lucy and Erica Byram packed well for 40th (36.55) and 63rd (37.53) respectively, followed by Ruby Sykes in 67th (38.02) to clinch fifth place behind Aldershot Farnham & District, Leeds City, Highgate Harriers and Ribble Valley Harriers.

Helen Berry was 92nd (38.48) and Julia Jagger 112th (39.24). LeaverHewitt finished 176th (41.17), Liz Woodfield, in her first cross country race, 279th (43.50), Lucy and mum Kath Farquhar 350th (45.37) and 485 th (48.34) respectively in a field of almost 1,000.

The senior men raced over 12kms, with close to 1,800 athletes running.

Holmfirth’s elite triathlete, Mark Buckingham moved into the top 10 on the first lap, but fell back to around 25th on the second lap. He regained his position on the first large lap and featured in the top 10 on the final extra-large lap sprinting to a superb ninth (44.54).

It was arguably Mark’s best ever cross country performance, particularly given the poor running conditions and possibly the best performance by any Holmfirth senior man at the National.

Chris Law had another super run to finish 97th (47.48), with Kai Sunman in 184th (49.43), Joe Law 266th (51.12), triathlete Jonny McLean in his first cross country for a few years 515th (54.57) and Clark Hind 541st (55.20) completed the team for 24th place out of 115. Chris Beadle was 917th (1.01.10), Jonny Sykes 947th (1.01.37) and Damian McQueen 1,082nd (1.03.54) to score the nineman team 22nd out of 59.
