Shock after boy, 12, is gunned down at centre
AN entire community has been left in shock after a 12-year-old boy was gunned down at a Huddersfield community centre.
Police cordoned off the Northfield Hall Community Centre’s car park in Norfolk Avenue, Norfolk Avenue, Brackenhall, just after 7pm on Tuesday, and a crime scene remained in place yesterday.
The victim – a young schoolboy who was at the centre on Tuesday – remains in hospital with serious injuries.
And a 13-year-old boy was threatened by a man with a machete just seconds after the schoolboy was shot.
Five police cars, two of them within the cordon, were present at the scene while officers tried to piece together what happened. Mounted police officers from
West Yorkshire Police spent the afternoon around Norfolk Avenue and the surrounding area while an outreach team tried to reassure residents.
Around 2.30pm a team of officers in white suits carried out a forensic search of the taped-off area in the car park.
And there was no shortage of outraged reaction from residents.
The daughter of a 45-year-old man who lives close to the centre said: “He heard a massive bang and he looked out of the window and he saw two young lads running away from the centre and jumping into an X3 or X5 BMW – its doors were already open.
“The next moment police were everywhere.
“There’s always something happening around here – kids throwing fireworks at each other and stones into our garden. I’m glad to be leaving.”
