WHEN PARENTAL AND HATE COLLIDE...

-

CALLING all parents. If you’ve ever simultaneously felt so much love for your child but also wanted to kill them, then this comedy will hit a nerve.

Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard play married couple Paul and Ally in this laugh-outloud funny series about the problems of parenting.

It’s a well-trodden concept, but one that plays out here with lots of laughs, refreshingly honest and well-observed.

It’s a double-bill tonight and in the first episode Paul spends the night fighting his own anger as seven-year-old Luke and four-year-old Ava refuse to go to sleep.

He gives himself a pep talk before storming in to tell them to shut up.

“Breathe, talk to them, do better, be better,” he says, before unleashing a torrent of swear words at them. Then of course he hates himself for it.

And then he and Ally argue over the fact that his parents let Luke have a two-hour nap during the day. The horror of it all.

In the second episode, a parents evening forces Paul and Ally to weigh up which is the best school for their kids. How far exactly will they go to get their kids into the best school?

It’s all a bit like family sitcom Outnumbered, but a late night version with saltier language.

Watch out for a brilliant supporting cast including Patrick Baladi as Ally’s inappropriate colleague and

Joanna Bacon as Paul’s mum – you’ll recognise her as Natalie’s mum in Love Actually.

A smart warts-and-all comedy, this will hit home for parents and perhaps stop non-parents from breeding…
