WHY GASKELL INJURY IS MASSIVE BLOW/PAGE 35 TOWN CHIEF SAYS CLUB ARE READY FOR SUMMER OFFERS FOR STAR STRIKER

- By MEL BOOTH

HUDDERSFIELD Town are braced for massive interest in prized asset Karlan Grant this summer transfer window.

That’s the message from club interim chief executive Mark

Devlin, who insists Town don’t have to sell their 16-goal leading scorer simply to balance the books.

Chairman Phil Hodgkinson turned down a £15m offer from an unnamed club in the January window, indicating the 22-year-old was happy to stay and help the club chase Championship survival.

Now, it appears the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Fulham are circling to swoop

for the striker, who signed for just £2m from Charlton Athletic in January 2019.

As Town train through the EFL coronavirus suspension which has meant the postponement of matches against Wigan Athletic, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City, Devlin says the club are well aware their top frontman will entice many suitors.

“Let’s be really honest, a guy like Karlan is going to attract interest goalscorers will attract interest and I have no doubt Karlan will be fated in the summer,” said Devlin.

“We don’t have to sell him and if Karlan decided he wanted to be part of our group longer term, then that would delight us.

“We have to look at that, though, when it comes to the time.

“At the moment, I am delighted to say Karlan is really throwing himself into his work, so to speak, and is doing everything he can to help us make sure we are nice and safe in the Championship.”

He added: “Everything will be judged on its own merits, when it comes to it. And Karlan is one of those players I have no doubt will be fated and that there will be interest.

“We know there is interest out there and we will deal with it when it comes to it.

“This doesn’t mean he will necessarily leave us, but we will do what is right for the club at the end of the day, in conjunction with talking to the player.”
