KIRKLEES Council and Huddersfield Town have teamed up to support vulnerable young people across the district.

The council is encouraging local employers to become ‘foster friendly’ – and the football club is the first to sign up.

Employers can adopt a foster friendly policy for their staff, offering foster carers flexibility to take time out and focus on settling a new child into their home, attending school or medical appointments or undergoing training.

For children who need foster care, it’s essential to have a secure and loving environment. This gives them vital help and stability at a difficult time in their lives.

In Kirklees there are more than 600 children and young people placed in foster care for many different reasons. The council adopted a foster friendly policy last year and is now hoping many other employers will follow suit.

Clr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for children, said: “We are delighted to see Huddersfield Town become foster friendly and I want to thank them for taking their community role so seriously.

“Fostering can make an enormous difference to children and young people, helping them to enjoy the best start in life. It’s only right that we all do everything we can to help people become, or continue to be, foster carers.

“Kirklees is full of incredible people who would make perfect carers, providing a young child or teenager with a loving home and the stability they need. As well as people who can offer short-term care, we need others to provide forever homes and commit to our children and young people until they are ready to live independently.

“Just like some children need care, foster carers need a network of support. Employers can make a difference in achieving this so that, as a Kirkleeswide community, we continue transforming children’s lives. I hope lots more employers will join our scheme.”

Zoe Shackleton, human resources manager at Huddersfield Town, said: “We are very proud to be working in partnership with Kirklees Council and we recognise the importance of achieving the very best outcomes for children and young people.

“As a club we’re committed to ensuring our employees achieve a positive work-life balance, allowing them to manage the demands of their career, family and caring roles.”

Employers who would like more information about foster friendly policies can contact the council by emailing lucy.kirby@kirklees.gov.uk.

The council also want to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a foster carer. There is lots of information on the website www.kirklees.gov. uk/fostering
