Town Women made to pay for poor second-half performance

-

A POOR second-half performance saw Huddersfield Town slip to a 4-2 FA Women’s Premier League defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

Albion started the stronger and put Town’s goal under early pressure with their right winger Natalie Murray causing havoc down Town’s left side.

Huddersfield appeared to have weathered the early storm but then in the 22nd minute Tash Tezgel scored with a shot after Town failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Town thought they had equalised with 34 minutes gone when Sarah Danby poked the ball home from close range, only to be denied by the assistant referee’s flag for offside.

Town were getting more into the game and drew level in the 38th minute when a Kate Mallin corner was headed home by top scorer Lucy Sowerby.

And, things got even better for Town when, following another corner, Vicky Abbott scored her first of the season, poking the ball home following a goalmouth scramble in the final minute to give them a 2-1 half-time lead.

Sowerby could have put Town two goals clear early in the second half but was denied by a good save from the West Brom keeper.

Their lead survived for 16 minutes as Albion pressure finally told and they equalised with a header.

Things went from bad to worse for Town when the hosts took the lead again with 20 minutes remaining with another header from a set-piece.

Town huffed and puffed for the remainder of the game and were undone once again with four minutes left as a quick break found their player unmarked in the box and she finished off the scoring to make it 4-2.
