DEAL OR NO DEAL?

- By MEL BOOTH

HUDDERSFIELD Town are monitoring what might happen with player contracts if the season is extended beyond June.

Professional contracts end seasonally on June 30, at which point players are free to move on if they are at the end of their terms, with talks permitted from the previous

January.

Town CEO Mark Devlin says the question has been considered by the club, even though they are in the early stages of the EFL’s coronavirus shutdown, which involves the postponement of all games until at least April 3. Town have lost their matches against Wigan Athletic, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City until the EFL decide what to do with the rest of the Championship season.

Collin Quaner and Danny Simpson (pictured) are the two players out of contract with Town on June 30.

The others - Joel Coleman, Ryan Schofield, Demeaco Duhaney, Jon Gorenc Stankovic and Elias

Kachunga - could be retained for an extra 12 months at the club’s behest.

“Nothing concrete at the moment, of course, but obviously with things like that we are looking at the possibilities and what could be outcomes,” said Devlin.

“There is a meeting on Tuesday, of UEFA, which we hope will give us a steer about what is going to go on in Europe.

“We then might know what type of deadline the EFL is going to try and work to with regard to this season.

“At that point, we will then know what we need to do in terms of paperwork.

“We have those concerns, it is on our radar but we are just waiting for a bit more information to come through next week and then we will do what we need to do.”
