Government urged to deliver on finance pledge

BUSINESS leaders in Huddersfield have called on the Government to deliver on their promises to do “whatever it takes” to help companies during the Coronavirus crisis.

On Tuesday Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced there would be a package of financial measures to support the economy – worth £330bn in loans and other aid – but businesses are still in the dark.

Martin Hathaway, managing director of the Huddersfield-based Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Government’s announcement on Tuesday to do ‘whatever it takes’ to support businesses was a welcome one, but with many SMEs throughout our region already on the brink, it’s crucial that we find out exactly how the grants and loans promised can be accessed – as soon as possible.

“There are reports that cash grants will be available for small businesses next week, which will be essential for their survival, but for many, it might be too late. It’s needed immediately for the shops, restaurants, theatres and companies in all other sectors that sell or provide a service directly to consumers that have seen a decline over the past fortnight.

“We have received numerous queries from our members on how businesses can access the support announced but no specific instructions or criteria has been rolled out yet, so we’re urging central Government to confirm this as a matter of urgency.

“We are in regular communication with the local authorities and the British Chamber of Commerce to gain the latest information on when and how funds will be paid to businesses across the districts of Huddersfield, Halifax and Wakefield.

“It is currently our top priority to ensure our businesses survive during this unprecedented time, and the Mid Yorkshire Chamber team is on hand to support members with specific queries.”
