Virus might wipe out Drakes season

FIRST HALF OF CRICKET CAMPAIGN ALREADY CANCELLED

- CRICKET By CHRIS OSTICK

THE Drakes Huddersfield haven’t ruled out the 2020 season being scrapped altogether due to the spread of coronavirus.

The league have told clubs to work on the basis that the first half of the season, which was due to begin on April 18, has been cancelled after the ECB suspended all forms of recreational cricket for the foreseeable future.

But the league have warned that, with so much uncertainty of what lies ahead, the whole season may be wiped out.

A message to all club secretaries read: “As things are currently understood, and despite there being no clear timeline attached to their (the ECB’s) decision, it is highly unlikely that this suspension will be lifted before July 1, 2020. Clubs should therefore work on the basis that the first half of the 2020 cricket season is cancelled.

“Furthermore, a scrapping of the whole season, depending on how the coronavirus emergency unfolds over the coming weeks and months, cannot be ruled out. The DHCL executive will continue to monitor the situation and developments, and consult with the cricket authorities over the coming weeks to establish a firmer picture of timelines and what options may exist for cricket in Huddersfield later on in 2020.

“We will keep you informed regarding further developments and any plans or decisions made throughout these difficult and very uncertain times. If any club has questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the league.”

The suspension will cause many clubs financial problems with no money coming in over the bar – especially if the whole summer is wiped out.

The league have, therefore, announced some measures in which to help in the initial stages:

Payment of 2020 league fees and affiliation fees will be delayed until cricket recommences – whenever that turns out to be.

Ball supplier Readers have agreed to hold stock of cricket balls and therefore no payment for balls or scorebooks will be required until the season gets under way.

No executive or council meetings will take place until further notice, but the league will issue regular monthly bulletins.

Any club wishing to suspend payments on their existing loan from the league may do so by making a direct request to the league treasurer Andy Hill. Details to be discussed and mutually agreed with Andy.

No further loans will be issued to clubs for the time being.
