Store boss told to bog off over price hike

-

A SUPERMARKET boss who sold boxes of toilet rolls at £10 says the deal backfired on him when customers protested.

In Birkby, Waqas Ali – owner of the popular Khadim Superstore on Blacker Road – said he paid £4,210 for the 470 set of rolls, which cost him £9 per pack.

He says he thought he was doing the community a favour by retailing them at £10 but says he has had that much grief he is done with selling them until things return to normal.

One woman wrote on Facebook: “I cannot believe that this superstore in the heart of the community is exploiting the old and the vulnerable for their own greed.

“I can’t believe they are taking advantage of people.

“They’ve doubled all the prices during a time when people can’t work and are losing money. All this store can think about is lining their pockets at the expense of those who have no choice.

“Toilet rolls are £9 when they are usually £5.50.”

But Mr Ali said: “Our regular suppliers are struggling so I have had to go to Leeds, Rochdale and even as far away as Stockport to buy things for us to sell.

“Regarding the toilet rolls, I thought customers would be pleased to be able to buy any at all but there’s no doubt that it has backfired on me.

“No more toilets rolls now until we get back to normal.”

Meanwhile, shocking pictures of panic buying at supermarkets around Kirklees have emerged, showing selfish customers hoarding huge quantities of nappies, toilet roll and baby milk.
