TOWN’S goalkeeping coach Paul Clements is looking forward to seeing the competition for places when football returns.

Town have three goalkeepers gunning for a starting spot for the final nine league matches of the season.

Jonas Lossl returned to the John Smith’s Stadium on loan from Everton following a head injury Kamil Grabara suffered days before transfer deadline day. The two of them are currently competing for a starting spot alongside Joel Coleman. Grabara has not featured since being stretchered off during the win at Hull City and when football does return after the coronavirus pandemic, goalkeeper coach Clements is looking forward to seeing the trio compete against one another.

“Jonas coming back helps us,” Clements said. “When Kamil is back fit, which I am hoping is really soon, it will be a really good challenge between the three of them.”

The decision to bring back

Danish stopper Lossl was a lastminute one and came due to the combination of Grabara’s injury and young prospect Ryan Schofield being out on loan with Livingston.

Lossl moved to Merseyside last summer after spending two seasons in the Premier League with the Terriers, but returned on a loan deal until the end of the 2019-20 season, a move that Clements described as a creative one. “Danny [Cowley] gave me the green light to get Ryan [Schofield] out on loan which obviously left us short with only two senior goalkeepers,” Clements added.

“We knew the risk and we spoke about the risk and then unfortunately, Kamil got a head injury on Tuesday night which left us going into the weekend’s game with only Joel as a senior goalkeeper, so we needed to be creative.

“I am not at a club where we can go and spend £70m, £5m, £10m on a goalkeeper, we hadn’t spent any money on a goalkeeper other than Joel Coleman for £70,000 or whatever it was five years ago.”
